Let's Write Neutrality between!
Badest Thing Around
Rizzoli's POV - 4am
I jolted awake, teeth gritted as I held in the howl of pain clawing it's way up my throat. I glared over at Swan's foot, tempted to bite it for kicking me against my broken ribs - but instead I forced myself to stand on my three working limbs. Everyone was still fast asleep and judging by the moon's direction, it was still early. My body was aching to stretch but I had no desire to jostle my healing bones so I slowly limped through the den site - to where Beca was in a tangle of furry limbs. Careful not to wake Red, I nudged Beca's muzzle and when her blue-brown eyes fluttered open I smiled softly.
"I'm going to head into Wentworth, I want to allow Jane time to adjust to the injuries - in case she wishes to head into the office today." I explained and at Beca's nod I licked her on the cheek. "I will see you later then." Beca's eyes closed again and a smile took over her muzzle so I took my leave.
I hopped over the brown-cream and reddish limbs of my Alpha and one of my Beta's, before setting a slow but steady pace towards the river. When I finally reached the cold stream, I noticed that two of the Eastern wolves were on the other side, getting a morning drink.
I lowered myself slightly to the ground - dropping my tail low to show I mean't no harm, but pressuring my fractured paw to not seem weak - and inched towards the water. The sandy brown female was sitting beside the black and tan female that I got hurt trying to help. I was annoyed by the injuries caused by the fall, but knowing she was ok made my actions and pain worth it.
Subtly, I lifted my bad paw from the ground as I reached the water. I could feel their eyes watching me from across the river as I drank my fill. I wondered if I should interact with them or just finish my drink and head off. Before I could decide if I was going to retreat or not, a soft noise sounded as the Sandy brown female cleared her throat.
"Rizzoli right?" She asked and my eyes darted towards them before settling on the speaker, I cleared my throat and sat down, lowering my head slightly in submission; it wouldn't do to agrivate a wolf from another pack in my injured state.
"Yes..." I whined out before clearing my throat and repeating it more clearly. "Yes." At my response the sandy brown female nodded.
"My name is Isles and this is Callie." The sandy brown female introduced with a small gesture from herself to her companion and I nodded in greeting. She then nudged into Callie with a smile.
"She's the one who saved your life." Isles said lowly and dark ears perked as Callie looked to her before looking over at me.
"Thankyou so much for helping me. That silly pup gets into trouble all the time." She said with a sheepish grin and I couldn't help but chuckle before being forced to breathe in deep with a wince as the action pained my ribs.
"I'm just glad that your both ok." I gritted out and Isles stood up, taking a small step towards the water's edge.
"Are you alright? Callie got off with some bruises and a limp, but you broke her fall..." Isles asked and I could see the worry in both of their eyes, so I sucked in a breathe and put on a brave face.
"A fractured forepaw and three broken ribs, but otherwise just some minor bruising. Nothing I can't handle." I explained before I noticed the sorrow clouding Callie's eyes as her ears cocked back. "Hey, chin up. The pup is fine and by this time next week you'll be all better." I tried to comfort her but she just whined.
"But you won't be." She whined and I sighed.
"It's ok. My hu..." I cleared my throat hoping to cover my slip-up. "My friend will be there for me throughout the healing process - one you haven't and most likely won't meet - and my pack mates will be there as well. Besides, a few broken ribs never stopped me before." I smiled reassuringly and, although still seeming sad, Callie nodded.
She went to respond when a howl broke through the Eastern forest. Isles stood straight, looking over her shoulder with perked ears.
"Alpha calls." She said as she nudged Callie in the direction of their den.
"Thankyou again and fast healing." Callie called over her shoulder before leaving. Isles kept an eye on her before she looked back at me, her eyes meeting mine with a soft smile.
"I'm glad you're ok." She said before she ran off into the forest after her limping packmate.
I looked down at my reflection in the water, into my deep brown eyes and sighed before heading up along the river, towards the Heart of Wentworth. I passed afew stray people on my way through the streets but Steppe Wolves have been settled here for generations and the humans of Wentworth are used to our presence so they just ignored me. It only took me afew minutes to cross town and make it to my appartment building where I stopped to see if anyone was around before ducking into the bushes and allowing Jane control. I cringed at Jane's cry of pain before mentally apologizing about the state in which I returned her body.
Jane's POV
"God! Everything hurts what the hell did you do this weekend?" I cried out and Rizzoli could only apologize about the amount of pain she left me in. I cradled my injured wrist to my chest and winced as I took in a deep breath before moving out of the bushes and slowly up the stairs into my appartment building. Usually I would take the Stairs up to my floor but I waited for the elevator and as I got off on my floor I was suprised to see Casey about to knock on my appartment door. I straightened my back and lowered my cradled arm, trying to hide my injuries before stepping towards him.
"Casey, what are you doing here this early?" I asked and he turned to me with suprise to see I wasn't in the appartment.
"What are you doing up so early, we both know your not a morning person." He returned and I smiled softly before collecting my keys with my good hand and opening the door. He followed me in and as I went to the kitchen he made himself comfortable on the lounge. I grabbed the orange juice from the fridge and downed the tangy liquid along with two asprin before putting it back and heading into the loungeroom. I gingerly sat down on the opposite side of the lounge and an awkward silence settled in. For a man that I'm engaged to, everything just seemed awkward between us and I find myself distincing from him more and more. When the awkwardness turned uncomfortable, I shifted slightly and cleared my throat.
"Is there a reason why you have come this morning? Maura is coming over soon to talk about something for work..." I said knowing that Casey would want to leave because he dislikes Maura, although I have no idea why.
Recognizion shone in his eyes and he stood up." I was just coming over to make sure you were ok, you just dissapeared this weekend without any word and I was worried about you." He responded and I nodded - I was certainly not ok, but I wasn't going to tell him that.
"I'll be ok, just had some... Business to attend to out off town." I responded without outright lying and he nodded before starting for the door.
"I'm glad your alright Jane, could we maybe have dinner this evening?" He asked hopefully and I smiled.
"Of cause, be here at 8 to pick me up." I responded even though all I wanted to do was rest for the next week and he smiled with a nod before leaving.
Once he was outside I slouched before wincing at the stupid action as it shifted my injured ribs uncomfortably. I sighed at my prediciment before my eyes flitted to my phone resting on the table. I thought about it for a few moments, if it was worth the pain to reach over and grab it but before I came to a proper decision my half-lidded eyes slid shut.
The sound of keys jingling awoke me before my front door opened softly. My sleep-fogged brain registered Maura slipping in before the door shut again with a soft click. I tried to keep my eyes focused on her but they slid shut anyway.
"Jane?" Maura called softly and I hummed to let her know I heard her. "Casey called me, he asked if I could find out what was wrong when I got here. Why did you lie to him?" She asked and I felt her move my legs, before they were replaced in her lap.
I sighed knowing she wouldn't drop it without at least some kind of answer and burried my face deeper into my pillow for a few minutes, I then shifted my legs carefully off her lap and sat up. Drawing in a deep breath through my nose, I looked down at my hands and thought about how to respond.
"I don't know Maura... Something between Casey and I has changed, ever since he gave me the ring to hold onto he-he's... Changed. I can't explain it, I can't be my own person when I am around him, everything feels awkward now and I feel like we don't have anything in common anymore." I explained choosing to focus on the main problem rather then worry her with my injuries.
I had to hold in a yelp, gritting my teeth as her arms wrapped around me in a comforting hug - the tightening of her arms around me, pulling at my ribs painfully.
"You need to tell him, if your unhappy..." She murmered and I nodded, returning her hug.
"I think this has been a long time coming, Casey want's to have dinner tonight and I'm going to tell him then." I responded and Maura nodded pulling back slightly, I felt nervous as her eyes seemed to study me, flitting from my face to my chest and down to my wrist.
She shifted slightly before gentally running her hands down my left side what looked like recognizion clouded her eyes before they flooded with worry
"Three broken ribs on your left side and your right wrist is fractured." She noted before gentaly picking up my right hand and lightly brushing her fingers over the brused skin. "What happened, it's only been two days. What did you do this weekend?" She asked with worry, lightly grasping my hand as she looked me in the eyes.
"I... Had some business to attend to out of town and I guess I drew the short stick." I replied with a soft chuckle, which was followed by a wince.
At that Maura got up and headed into the kitchen, she returned with a glass of water which I took greatfully. I sipped it slowly and she regarded me with calculating eyes, when I looked up at her the look vanished to be replaced by worry and her usual brightness.
"You should get some more sleep. I called the office they won't be expecting us untill 8." She explained and I smiled at her thoughtful nature before shifting to lay down, my feet once again in her lap.
"Can you call Emma and let her know we will be in late?" I asked sleeply and I felt myself drift off before I heard an answer.
---
"Get up Harmon." I heard the gruff voice of my partner call and I sighed before I opened my eyes to see a smiling Emma Winters. "I didn't believe it when Swan told me what happened but jesus you got battered good." The blonde chuckled and I glared up at her.
"Can it Winters, Maura's here." I hissed and Emma grined.
"Nahh, she's at the morgue. We found a three day old body and Maura call Suspicious Death, she's doing the autopsy now. Dr Worrywart sent me to check on you." She said as she dropped onto the couch just missing my feet.
At her words I shifted into a seated position and glanced at the clock over my shoulder, 11am. I got to my feet and headed towards my bedroom Swan on my hills.
"Why didn't she wake me?" I asked as I pulled my top over my head and tossed it to the side, gritting my teeth at the pain before I began unbuckling my pants. Emma leaned against the door frame watching me with bordom.
"You know Maura shes like mother hen, always worrying about you, making you food and waking you up in the mornings. I sware she's basicly your wife." Emma thought outloud as I headed into my personal bathroom.
Emma moved to lean against the doorframe and I mulled over her words as I waited for the spray to heaten before getting in and closing the frosted glass.
"I doubt Maura would ever like me like that." I said and I heard Emma chuckle, "What?"
"Nothing." She replied and I could tell she was hiding something from me but she changed the topic before I could ask.
"Speaking of Wives let's talk about husbands. I bet Rizzoli'll be happy that your breaking it off with the Liutenient." She said off-handedly and before I could ask she was chattering away again. "Don't worry, your Wifey is like a titanium vault when it comes to stuff you tell her, trying to get anything from her is like pulling teeth." I'm used to Emma's blasae way of communicating but refering to Maura as my 'Wifey' is a new one and not one that I can say I hate. "I figured it out on my own, when Maura called me to say you'd be in late I asked about why she was here so early and she said that Casey had mentioned you being off which of cause meant he had seen you this morning aswell. Now tell me Detective, why would you see your 'Husband' and not tell him a thing about your injuries but your 'friend' knows. Then I got to thinking - If you told him the bastard would never leave your side, and even Swan can tell that your relationship with him has been going South for a while now. Breaking it off seems like the most logical option, then you and your Wifey can live happily ever after." She finished with a chuckle and I turned off the water before cracking the glass slightly and glaring out at her.
"She's not my Wifey, now go call her and let her know we're on our way." I grumbled and Emma just smirked at me before shrugging and leaving the bathroom.
"But you want her to be." She called back in a sing-song voice and I huffed.
I snagged a towel from the rack and headed into my bedroom with a sigh. I slowly got dressed and just as I was pulling on my blazer, Emma came back into the room.
"She specifically ordered me not to let you leave the house, then she muttered to herself 'since when does she do what people tell her to do' before telling me to tell you that you can come in but you have to take it easy and you have to stay in the office." Emma finished with a nod of her head and a grin at remembering it all, I couldn't help but smile at both Maura's protectiveness and Emma's Emmaness.
"I can do the second one but I can't guarentee that I'll stay in the stuffy office, the morgue is pretty awesome." I grinned and Emma shook her head before gesturing for me to go first.
---
Emma is a horific driver, I have no clue how she got her licence. Shannon and Stella even felt the need to pull us over, even though they knew it was us, just to get a good laugh. Except for getting pulled over and my usual comments about her driving the ride was quiet and we got to the office in one peice.
Although it hurt I felt relieved that it was my wrist that got fractured and not one of my ankles, at least I could still walk. We headed into the office and took the elevator down to the mourge, and I welcomed the familiar site. Maura was putting the final stitches in our female victim and Susie, Maura's assistant was logging findings into the computer.
"Got an ID yet?" I asked and Maura looked up at me with a frown.
"You really should have stayed at home, Detective Winters and I can handle this one." She said and I put on a frown.
"You make it sound like you don't want me around." I said as I gingerly crossed my arms over my chest.
"You know that's not what I meant, your definitely wanted. I just don't like you moving around when your ribs need time to heal." She replied and Emma nudged me with a grin.
"See Wifey." She stage-whispered and Maura glared over at her, Emma's hands shot up to show she meant no harm and Maura's eyes returned to me.
"Why don't you go up and see if Korsac or Frost need any help in the office?" She suggested and I tilted my head at her with a bored expression.
"Let's see, filing and writing reports while you two are speaking for the dead, solving murders and catching bad guys. Please don't give me the short stick again." I whined and I could tell the moment she caved.
"Fine, but take it easy." She gave and I smiled.
"Now what do we know?" I requested and Maura gestured for Emma and I to move to the other side of the body before she started going over the Victim so we could get to work on finding her some peace.

In the end, after having a talk with the girls friends. We found out that the teens were having a campout in the woods, survival training and Terrisa - the young girls name - had eaten some berries which turned out to be poisonous and she died, her friends panicked and burried her near the campsite. The whole thing was an accident the girls parents are holding a funeral for her tomorrow. Seems Like Maura got her way in the end anyway, here I am, sitting at my desk doing paperwork and she had the gaul to leave because she had somewhere to be. I scoffed at the small part of my mind (Rizzoli) that said she should be taking care of me and Emma looked at me confused from her desk.
"What's got you all huffed." She asked and I looked over at her before back down at my paperwork.
"Maura's got Susie to do her paperwork for her and shes of scott free while were slaving away with pens and stamps, hows that fair?" I asked and Emma just chuckled.
"The days almost over, let's get the paperwork done and head on home."
I jolted awake, teeth gritted as I held in the howl of pain clawing it's way up my throat. I glared over at Swan's foot, tempted to bite it for kicking me against my broken ribs - but instead I forced myself to stand on my three working limbs.
