“You crazy mutt.” Bane laughed as he tackled his older brother back to the ground. Asylum laughed at his younger brother’s attempt to take him down and batted the two year old away with a flick of his tail.
“You’re the crazy one, thinking you can win against me.” He laughed lightly, amused by his younger brothers poor hunting ability.
“So brother, how is your alpha training going?” Skype asked as he sat on the sidelines watching his older brother’s tussle.
“Good, it’s not easy but father believes I’ll be ready by next spring.” Asylum replied as he rolled over and allowed Bane to tackle him. Bane cheered triumphantly at finally pinning his three year old brother that he let the wolf go and jumped around spraying dirt at both his siblings.
“Stop mucking around you Idiots and come back to the den!” A deep male voice called out but it was quickly hushed by a brighter female voice.
“Be quiet Talus! Brothers, the pack meeting is about to start, you must hurry.”
“Coming Shannon.” Skype called as he trotted up the hill and into the den site, closely followed by his older, stupider, brothers.
The three wolves followed Shannon and Talus over to the campfire where two other pack members sat.
“It’s quiet early for you to be tussling in the dirt isn’t it Beta?” Memphis asked looking over at Asylum as the older wolf sat down beside him.
“You know me Mem, always looking for a way to rile him up.” Asylum laughed as he nudged Bane who had sat down beside him. They both laughed when the younger wolf scowled.
“Leave him alone you two.” Faith called from Memphis’ other side.
“Awe Fae, you know we mean him no harm.” Memphis said to his older sibling but Faith just glared at the two of them and they both shut up.
Shannon laughed lightly, she sat down between Bane and Skype, as Talus sat down beside Faith. The seven wolves talked amongst themselves till a rock flicked into the fire, the flame turned from red to blue for only a second. They all went quiet and watched as both Alpha Kinozara and Alpha Essau made their way over, they sat down on the opposite side of the fire to their pack and the younger seven wolves bowed.
“They are finally coming.” Kinozara started and his pack looked at him with curious eyes.
“Who is father?” Talus asked confused by his father’s grave start.
“A clan of vampire’s are heading this way… Memphis, Faith, they are your family.” Kinozara said as he watched the two closely. “They do not come in peace though, we hadn't told you this because we wanted you to feel this was your home and that we are your family, but you deserve to know.” The alpha took in a deep breath before he started. “Unfortunately you two were supposed to be killed the night of your birth, the clan leader disapproved of your parents mating and they were going to end it by killing the both of you. However you were brought here. One of your family members, though we know not who, left you with us as infants, to save your lives. Although you have Coywolf heritage, you were turned after birth and those chains you have been told not to remove allow you to grow as normal pups and keep your vampiric sides in check. We raised you along with our own cubs and consider you our family, but they have finally come to claim your lives.” He spoke with a saddened voice and sighed when Faith started shaking.
“However we won’t let them harm either you, we have decided what will happen.” Essau said in a reassuring voice, she just hoped their plan would work.
“They may out number us and are defiantly stronger than us, but they will not outsmart us. Memphis, Faith, Asylum, Shannon and Talus, you five will fight alongside Essau and I.” Kinozara said and the five wolves nodded, they were a pack and needed to stick together. “Bane, Skype, You are to run, get as far from here as possible, and only return when I sound the howl of victory. Got it?” He said to his two youngest.
“But father, why can’t we fight?” Bane asked confused and was hushed by his mother.
“It is for your own safety, neither of you would survive the brutal fight coming.” Essau explained and the youngest two nodded in understanding.
“Now go! It is best you leave before they get close!” Kinozara commanded, both Bane and Skype nodded before they took off out of their den site and ran north, their family watching their fading forms from the meeting place.
They stopped running when they had both started to get tired and ducked under a rocky overhang, to escape from the harsh sun.
“We will wait here for fathers call.” Bane panted as he lay down.
“Brother… Father, won’t call.” Skype said as he sat down, panting slightly himself.
“What do you mean?”
“He means that your pack won’t survive the attack of the northern clan, young one.” A female voice said from above them.
Skype ducked out from the shelter of the overhang cautiously and looked up at the large female Coyote that had just spoken. Bane leapt out, caution to the wind, and glared up at the Coyote.
“What do you mean they won’t survive, who are you?” He snarled, annoyed at her words.
The Coyote jumped down from the rock and looked down at the younger canines before her.
“My name is Akira. I am older step-sister of Memphis and Faith, the two Coywolves I left at your den, three years ago. My mother mated with a wolf and Memphis and Faith were born, but a week before their birth I was attacked and turned by the northern clan, who then gave me my pendant. When I returned to my family after a week of solitude, my mother was dead and my half-siblings were hidden in our den. I had gathered them and returned to the northern clan hoping my creators would help, but they only attacked the pups. One of the stronger warriors managed to land a bite on each of them before I got away and their change almost killed them. I found four more pendants on the outer skirts of the northern clan and gave one to each pup. I then found your pack and left them in the Alpha’s care. I’m assuming you two are from that pack.”
“Yes, we are. Memphis and Faith are fellow pack members of ours.” Bane said as Skype watched the coyote with curiosity.
“Then I would suggest finding somewhere else to go. The northern clan is ruthless and will kill your pack.” Akira said before she turned and started away.
“Wait!” Skype called out and the coyote stopped, looking back at the two wolves.
“Yes?” She asked confused about what he wanted.
“Turn me.” Skype’s voice quivered slightly as he lowered to the ground.
Akira looked down at the pup who although scared seemed determined, ‘I will not ruin his life.’ “No.” She answered simply before continuing.
Skype watched her go and shook his head, “You must!” He yelped as he scampered up to block her path.
“Brother, what are you doing?” Bane yelled, “Are you crazy, we will return home soon, how would father react if you change because of slight uncertainty about their welfare?”
“Bane, they are not going to survive this, plain and simple!” Skype yelled back and he glared at Akira, a fire burning in his eyes like she had never seen before. “Change me.”
“Fine…”
They had been moving for over an hour now.
“Where the hell are we going?” Bane asked as he followed the Coyote and his brother.
“If you wish for me to turn you, then we must leave this place. The northern clan will surly kill you on site.” Akira explained as she ducked down behind a row of bushes, the two wolf brothers following her example. They all looked through the thicket and the brothers were amazed at the site of the large ship docked in the sand.
“They come out here once a month, not sure why but they just do. They will be leaving at sun high tomorrow. We must be on that boat, if you still wish for the change.” She said as she looked down at Skype.
He nodded and Bane grumbled something low before nodding also.
“Good, then we rest here.” She said as she got comfortable in the shade.
Bane and Skype nodded doing the same thing, once the both of them were in a deep sleep Akira stood up. Using her inhuman strength she knocked them both over the head to insure they were unconscious, before she slipped the remaining two pendants she had found around their necks.
“If they are unconscious, this should be mostly painless.” She said to herself before she bit the both of them.
She lay down watching as the two brother’s tossed and turned as the change occurred.
With a large yawn Bane stretched and blinked a few times before he stumbled to his feet. He shook his head when everything seemed brighter and louder. He used his paw to wipe his face before he nudged Skype awake, his younger brother having the same reaction. A beautiful laugh drew their attention to Akira who had watched them wake up.
“It’s your enhanced senses, your sight, smell, hearing and taste are all peaked, you will also be stronger and faster. Now you must eat quickly, the boat leaves soon.” Akira said as she nudged a zebra carcass towards them.
Feeling un-naturally hungry, they both tore into the zebra, both drinking and eating till they felt full. When they were done, they licked themselves clean and turned to Akira ready to go. The coyote moved slowly over to Skype and licked him on the nose.
“Missed a bit.” She smiled before turning back to look through the bush.
Bane smirked at his brother as Skype blushed brightly beneath his fur. They both noticed Akira had slipped through the bush and quickly followed her. In less than ten minutes they had snuck aboard the ship and it was ready to sail back to the main land.
The three of them leapt off the side of the boat splashing into the water, they swam to shore and shook themselves dry. Bane and Skype looked around in amazement and Akira only trotted on ahead.
“Welcome to Seattle, Washington boys, I don’t plan to settle down here, but feel free to if you wish.” Akira spoke lightly as she headed east down the footpath. At the first parting of buildings she bolted across the road and headed into another street, she turned into an alley way and followed the back roads through the city. Both Bane and Skype stuck close to her and the three of them ran at a leisurely pace of twenty-five mph.
“Akira,” Skype started, as he sucked in another breath before letting his tongue hang out the side of his mouth again. “Where exactly do you plan to settle down?” He asked and the coyote looked at him with a smile.
“Wolf Point, on the outskirts of Montana. At our current pace it would take us about four days to get there, rests and meal times included.” Akira explained as she dodged a garbage can that was placed in the middle of the alleyway, both Bane and Skype followed her example, zipping around the bin and continuing on behind her.
It was late into day three when they trotted into Hays. They quickly found a small lake just off the road and lay down for a rest.
“We will be there by this time tomorrow.” Akira said as she watched the two boys playing in the water.
“What is at Wolf Point that has you running this far to reach there?” Skype asked and Akira smiled at him.
“South, not too far from Wolf Point is a small forest and also a river. The town is also becoming famous for their Rescue Centre's DNA extractions. You both know that because of your vampirism that you can now turn human right?” They both nodded, Akira had explained it to them while they were on the boat. “Well they can extract DNA from animals and place it into humans, which allows that human to morph into the animal the DNA came from, it also works vice-versa. I have also heard that vampires aren’t discriminated in this small town and quite a few of the inhabitants are actually morphers themselves.”
“It sound’s interesting, perhaps when we get there we can live amongst the humans. Have a happy life, and as you said. The forest is there if we ever need shelter from the life of roofs and fences.” Bane yipped, he had grown happy about the concept of a new life and was quiet looking forward to see what would happen.
The sun was high and the sky clear as they trotted into the streets of Wolf Point. Akira stopped as they passed a street sign and stood on her hind legs to read it.
“Sunset Drive…” She mumbled before dropping to her paws and glancing around. “The Rescue Centre is in the heart of town. We must head there.” The boys nodded and the three canines continued through the streets until they came to the building they were searching for.
“Is this the place?” Skype asked and Akira nodded.
They approached the double doors that automatically opened for them and walked in. The three looked around, the Wolf Point Rescue Centre also doubled as a Medical Centre. They headed over to the counter and looked up at the Rhodesian ridgeback who was focused on reading something. Bane yipped and the dog jumped, startled before looking up.
“Well hello, who might you three be?” She asked as she jumped down from the chair.
She walked around the counter and sat down before them.
“I’m Akira, and the boys are Bane and Skype.” Akira explained as the dog studied the pendants around their necks, before looking over at a page covered in pictures, pinned on the wall behind the desk.
“Ah I see, three members of the northern clan. You have come quiet away from your clan territory. Is everything alright?” She asked confused about why the three had come so far.
“I was run out of the Northern Clan three years ago, the two pups are from a pack near the clan’s territory. Their pack was attacked by the vampires, I turned them at the youngers request and brought them here, that way we would all be safe.” Akira explained and the female nodded.
“I see, please wait. My human will assist you. Oh and I’m Valkyre.” The Ridgeback responded as she scratched at her collar, hanging before her tags was her own pendant.
Akira noticed the blood red colour of the pendant as appose to her own violet coloured pendant. “I see you’re from the southern clan, what brings you here?” She asked making polite conversation with the dog.
“Similar situation to you…” The Valkyre replied with a saddened tone.
“Valkyre!” A female voice called out and the Ridgeback’s tail started wagging.
She yipped excitedly as an old lady walked over to them. The old lady patted her on the head before she noticed Akira, Skype and Bane. She moved over to the three of them slow in both her old age and caution. Akira bared her neck to the human and the old lady smiled. She held Akira’s pendent in her hand for a minute before letting it fall back against Akira’s chest.
“You three have come quiet a way, haven’t you?” The old lady asked as she patted Akira lightly. “I guess you three will be needing placement huh?” She laughed lightly as Valkyre circled the group of four and sat down leaning into the old lady’s leg. “It just so happens that two families have been enquiring about getting a companion. Both homes are quiet close together and close to here. Would you boys like to house with them? Akira can stay here and keep Valkyre company and you both can come and go as you please.” The lady explained and with a quick glance between the three of them, Akira, Skype and Bane agreed to the old lady’s request. With that said, the old lady walked away to get everything ready, while Valkyre, Akira, Skype and Bane all talked amongst themselves.
Bane was up on the wet tiled roof of his house, lying on his back, watching the moon above, thinking. Seven generations had passed since he, Skype and Akira had first gotten to Wolf Point and were housed with their new families. He and his younger brother always stayed with the children of their previous masters and were content with their housing. Valkyre, after the old lady’s passing had sorted out the dispute between her and her clan and returned south to be with her family. Akira however, after the old lady’s passing, was currently residing with a lady who has been causing her and Skype trouble since they got together ten years ago, because of this she had distanced herself from both him and Skype, and the two brothers rarely, if at all, got to see her. Skype’s current family spent most of their time out of the house, so he basically lived alone and was happy about it, although not being able to see Akira much dampened his mood considerably. Bane’s current family consisted of Kuno, his father figure and a human. Jordon, his adoptive sister and a tiger. And Yuki, Jordon’s mother, she’s also a tiger. He and Skype had also made quite a few friends since the three of them moved to Wolf Point, their current friends, of three years now are Tsume, a rugged wolf, Danielle, a light-coated Malinois and Shai, a human. They all met when Skype and Bane repeated school (again), starting back at year seven. The five had instantly gotten along and became fast friends. The sound of a door opening and closing alerted Bane to the presence of his sister. The unmistakable sound of claws clicking against the pavement told him she was in her true form, which meant she was probably going somewhere.
"Sister." He called down to her and she froze, knowing that she had been caught sneaking out she sighed before looking up at her brother.
"Yes." She asked, hoping he would let her go out tonight.
The brown wolf looked down at his black and silver sister with a protective glint in his eyes, "Tell me where you are going and I may let you leave." He said and she sighed.
"Bane," She whined before her ears flattened and her tail wrapped around her back leg. "I'm just going to see my friends."
"And that leopard!" Bane growled as he stood up glaring down at the teen. "I will not allow it, what would father say if he knew you were sneaking out to see a boy."
Jordon growled at her brother before storming back towards the house. "Maybe if you got a mate, you would understand and not be so stubborn about letting me go see mine." Bane huffed at her words.
"He's not your mate and as if I would ever find one... At least, not one who accepts me for who I am..." He whispered and his answer was the sound of the front door slamming behind an irate tiger.
“You’re the crazy one, thinking you can win against me.” He laughed lightly, amused by his younger brothers poor hunting ability.
“So brother, how is your alpha training going?” Skype asked as he sat on the sidelines watching his older brother’s tussle.
